Band 9: In many parts of the world, people now often throw things away when they are broken and buy new ones, whereas in the past broken things were repaired and used again. Why do you think this is the case? What problems may it lead to?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the advent of modern technology and the widespread availability of consumer goods, replacing broken items has become far more common than repairing them. This shift can be attributed to advancements in manufacturing and the affordability of new products. However, this trend poses significant environmental challenges, including increased waste and resource depletion.

In recent decades, technological advancements have become an integral part of daily life. With the high demand for new products, companies continuously produce affordable items, making it easier for consumers to replace old goods with new ones. This leads to excessive waste, as outdated products are often discarded. In contrast, people in the past used their appliances for as long as possible, resulting in significantly less waste than today. Another notable shift is that many individuals strive to keep up with modern technology, frequently upgrading their devices, such as smartphones, earphones, laptops, washing machines, and kitchen gadgets. Given these trends, it is unsurprising that people feel compelled to buy new products even when they already own similar ones.

This throwaway culture has severe consequences, particularly for the environment. The rapid disposal of electronic devices and household items contributes to overflowing landfills and pollution, as many of these products contain non-biodegradable materials. Additionally, manufacturing new goods requires vast amounts of natural resources, leading to deforestation, water shortages, and increased carbon emissions. Beyond environmental concerns, excessive consumption fosters a mindset of materialism, where people value convenience over sustainability. This can diminish appreciation for long-lasting products and discourage efforts to develop a more sustainable lifestyle.

In conclusion, the affordability of new products and the pressure to keep up with technological advancements have led to a shift away from repairing broken items. However, this trend has significant negative consequences, particularly for the environment and resource consumption. Encouraging a culture of repair and reuse is essential to reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
