Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: In some countries, parents are choosing to teach children themselves at home instead of sending them to school. Do the advantages of homeschooling outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In some countries, there has been an ongoing trend toward parents teaching children at home instead of entrusting this job to school teachers. There has been much controversy about whether homeschooling brings more benefits or drawbacks to childrens. From my point of view, the disadvantages of homeschooling are much more significant than the advantages.

It is understandable why some people think that homeschooling is more beneficial for children. Some advantages of homeschooling is that it helps people save money and strengthen their family bonds. Firstly, students don’t have to pay many things, such as tuition fees, which private school can be quite expensive, and transportation cost since parents often spend money on gas, public transportation, or car maintenance for school drop-offs and pick-ups. Moreover, private or public schools might require specific uniforms and additional textbooks or educational materials, so for those who are adopting homeschooling, it’s unnecessary to spend money buying things that they don’t need for studying at home. Besides, parents can forge a stronger bond with their children while teaching. Personally teaching their children can engage in meaningful learning activities and spend more time with their children. Consequently, they can understand each other better, strengthening familial relationships between parents and offspring.

However, there are some drawbacks of studying at home that cannot be ignored, which I believe is more significant. Firstly, homeschooling reduces the money we spend but if a parent decides to homeschool full-time, this might mean forgoing a full-time salary, which leads to the loss of income. Moreover, studying at home can be a financial burden due to the cost of some materials and resources that are available in traditional schools. Secondly, there is a clear disadvantage to homeschooling is that students will probably lack essential social skills. Indeed, students can only interact with their parents and not make new friends. This situation makes them lose the opportunities to communicate with others such as peers or teachers and thus many children will likely have trouble with their behavior in some social situations.

In conclusion, there are many good and bad aspects of homeschooling. However, I still believe the uneconomícs of studying at home and the lack of students’ social skills outweigh any advantages.
