It is widely accepted that the extinction of animal species is a natural phenomenon. Some individuals argue that it is pointless to intervene in this process. I partially disagree with this viewpoint and this essay will elucidate my stance.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that the loss of certain animal species is an inevitable consequence. This is primarily due to the constantly changing natural habitats. Extreme weather events, such as rising global temperatures, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods, have significantly adverse effects on animal populations. For example, the melting of polar ice caps due to global warming results in the loss of natural habitats for North Pole-dwelling animal species. Consequently, those unable to adapt to these changes face gradual extinction. Additionally, the proliferation of certain species can lead to the extinction of others through natural selection. Specifically, a superior species may threaten the food sources of others, causing their populations to dwindle and eventually vanish.
On the other hand, it is unfounded to assert that efforts should not be made to prevent this process. This is because the survival of certain animal species is crucial for the stability of entire ecosystems. Different animal species in nature are interconnected and their extinction can disrupt the delicate balance of the food chain, posing a threat to the existence of other species. For instance, the disappearance of a certain prey species can severely impact the population of its predator. Moreover, human activities, such as poaching, deforestation, and environmental pollution, have significantly contributed to the endangerment of various species. Thus, it is imperative for humans to take measures to address these issues in order to prevent further extinctions.
In conclusion, while I acknowledge that the extinction of some animal species is inevitable due to severe environmental changes and natural selection, I firmly believe that human intervention is necessary to mitigate this phenomenon. By taking proactive measures, humans can play a pivotal role in preventing the extinction of numerous animal species and preserving the delicate balance of ecosystems.
