It is commonly believed that nowadays the main factors that affect a child’s development are media, pop culture and friends. A different point of view is that family plays the most significant role. In my view, while media and friends are important, the family remains the most crucial influence.

There might be several reasons why people hold the view that media, pop culture, and friends are the main influences on children today. Firstly, children spend a huge amount of time consuming media. For example, many young people watch videos on social media for several hours every day. This exposes them to the latest fashion, music, and ideas from pop culture, which shapes their opinions and how they want to look. Secondly, as children grow older, they start to care more about what their friends think. They want to fit in with their peer group. This makes friends a very strong influence on their daily behaviour, such as the hobbies they choose or the way they talk.

Despite the arguments mentioned above, the family has a crucial role to play in the development of a child. It undoubtedly provides the foundation for a child’s values and beliefs. In other words, from a very young age, children learn their first lessons about right and wrong from their parents. For example, parents teach children to be polite, to be honest, and to work hard. These core values, learned at home, often stay with a person for their whole life. Furthermore, families provide emotional support and security, which is essential for a child to feel safe and develop confidence.

In conclusion, while people’s opinions differ as to what most influences a child, I would argue that the family is the most significant factor. Media, pop culture and friends certainly have a strong impact, especially on a child’s interests and social life. However, the family builds the fundamental character and provides the stable foundation upon which a child can grow.
