There is a view that people would have more spare time in the 21st century with a help of advanced technologies. While it this prediction considered reasonable, I believe that it has partly come true as technologies save more time and impacts people’s mental health at the same time.
One primary reason why it is partly true is that todays world almost everything can be done faster by machines and also robots. A clear example of this can be a high-tech devices in a large factories, which contrinbutes shortenning human-intensive labour; as automated system complete tasks with a little push. As a result, processes have become more efficient and less time-consuming. Similarly, modern cars and planes allow people to travel longer distances with short time. If it were not for this developments, individuals still transport with camels or horses.
However, despite these time-saver technological advancements, many people feel busier than previous years. Although modern devices such as smartphones, laptops, and high-speed internet were designed to make life easier, they have mix work and personal life. In the past, employees usually left their work at the office. Today, however, smartphones allow people to work anytime and anywhere through the internet, which means they are constantly connected to their jobs. Consequently, as many employees respond to messages and complete tasks even during late nights, weekends, or holidays, they feel more anxiety and stress.
In conclusion, although technological progress in the 21st century has made many daily tasks quicker and more convenient, modern life is still very busy and sometimes chuck-full of irregularities. In some cases, it increases stress levels. Therefore, the prediction has only partially come true, and the overall impact of technology on free time remains complex.
