It was anticipated that advancements in technology would provide people in the 21st centurywith significantly more leisure time. In my opinion, this contention is entirely valid, as theaverage person is largely free from time constraints related to commuting and doing householdchores.
First of all, regarding work-related technology, businesses now can leverage applications thatsupport remote work to reduce commute times. Undoubtedly, numerous apps such as Zoom and Google Meet have revolutionized video conferencing by offering high audio quality, comprehensive meeting summaries, and AI-driven problem-solving suggestions. These appsallow employees to work from home to varying degrees while still enabling effectivecommunication. In contrast, in the previous century, workers were unable to work remotely, asituation that compelled employees to spend a considerable amount of time commuting.
Secondly, there are now specific technological devices that save substantial time previouslyspent on monotonous household chores. Such notable inventions include robot vacuumcleaners and washing machines. In the past, cleaning rooms and washing clothes were twotime-consuming tasks that had to be done regularly, requiring at least a portion of one’s dayand a degree of energy. For example, homemakers in Vietnam used to spend considerable timescrubbing clothes and hanging them to dry. This process has become much simpler as users cannow load their clothes, select a cycle and let washing machines and dryers do the work, whichfrees up time for more enjoyable activities.
In conclusion, I am convinced that technological advancements in the 21st century havesubstantially increased free time due to the facilitation of remote working conditions andautomation of household chores. Looking ahead, this century will probably witness more novelinventions emerging, providing even more opportunities for one’s leisure pursuits.
