Band 8+: Machines are taking over more and more jobs previously done by humans. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this phenomenon.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Machines and artificial intelligence have increasingly replaced humans in several fields. Although it is argued that the use of AI brings many significant benefits, it also creates some serious challenges. This essay will examine both the advantages and disadvantages of the growing popularity of labour- saving machines.

To begin with, the growing use of machines has several merits. Firstly, unlike human workforce, machines can work continuously without requiring breaks or making errors caused by carelessness, which makes them more productive and efficient. Secondly, labour- saving machines are economically beneficial for business owners because they minimise labour costs and increase profitability. For example, some industries demand a large number of employees, but the need for additional staff can be reduced through the use of modern technology. In addition, they can deal with dangerous tasks that would otherwise put workers’ lives at risk as seen in the example of mining, chemical factories.

From another perspective, replacing people has also many drawbacks. One major disadvantage is unemployment. As machines and artificial intelligence can perform many tasks more quickly and efficiently than humans, many workers may lose their jobs. This can lead to financial difficulties and a lower standard of living for many families. Furthermore, there are jobs that require human judgement and decision-making. For example, doctors often have to make complex decisions based on patients’ conditions, which machines cannot always do accurately.

In conclusion, although the growing use of machines and artificial intelligence offers numerous benefits, such as increased productivity, lower labour costs and improved safety, it also brings several drawbacks, including unemployment. Therefore, it is important to strike a balance between technological development and the protection of human employment.
