Band 7+: Many parents today employ private tutors to teach their children after school hours. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, there is high competition in many countries amongst school children, putting them under a lot of pressure to receive good grades at school. Many parents are hiring tutors to help raise their children’s grades. I believe this can be helpful in certain situations but must be kept to a minimum to prevent children from suffering burnout or not having enough time with their friends.

There can be a lot gain from private tuition for schoolchildren as it provides one-on-one attention with classes designed specifically for the student. If a child has a weakness in a certain area, a tutor can help them catch up with their peers by going over materials until the child understands it. If a child is struggling overall, private classes can help them grasp concepts in their own time. This can help raise the child’s level in class whilst simultaneously raising their confidence. The more they study privately, the higher the chance of keeping up with the class.

However, this situation is sometimes abused by parents and it can cause considerable suffering for children as they experience high levels of stress and miss out on opportunities to see friends after school.Firstly, children in some countries already have a considerable burden to work hard at school during the day with homework in the evenings. Having a private tutor increases that workload and potentially lead to serious burnout. Secondly, children need time away from schoolwork to be able to play and meet with friends. Spending time on private tuition can rob them of the chance to develop important social skills from a young age, instead encouraging a development of unhealthy competitiveness. Hence, hiring a tutor can lead to serious developmental issues and rob a child of a healthy childhood.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge that children can benefit greatly from having private home lessons, I would strongly argue that parents need to be very careful about the amount of tuition their child are being force to do. Too much study can cause great stress and deprive their child of a healthy childhood.

Some individuals are of the opinion that fresh water should be freely available for everyone whenever they want. However, others say that it is better to strictly regulate fresh water usage. While there are many positive effects in the implementation of strict water usage, I firmly disagree with this approach.

Admittedly, there are merits associated with the approach in strictly regulating the use of water. The first reason would involve the wasteful use of water in people’s routine. In many developed countries around the world, fresh water often costs a really cheap price, in which people will often capitalize this aspect to recklessly waste tons […]
