Band 7+: Many people believe that modern games are not better than traditional games in helping children develop their abilities. To what degree do you support or oppose this idea ?

Some argue that modern games are less effective than traditional games in helping children enhance their capabilities. In my opinion, despite some advantages of conventional games regarding physical activity and social interaction, I strongly believe that modern games offer unparalleled opportunities for cognitive development and technological literacy, which are essential in today’s world.

On the one hand, some people might be in favour of traditional games because of their positive impacts on children’s physical health and social skills development. Classic activities, such as hide and seek, jump rope, and rock climbing, require movement, functioning as a form of exercise that improves stamina, respiratory health, and overall fitness levels. Moreover, with the rise of sedentary lifestyles, traditional games provide a necessary counterbalance to screen time. Not only do conventional games develop children’s health and well-being but also enhance social skills. These activities typically require face-to-face communication and teamwork, providing children with valuable opportunities to develop problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict resolution abilities. It is crucial that these skills prepare children to navigate real-world challenges and adapt seamlessly to adulthood.

On the other hand, there are undeniable benefits associated with modern games. Firstly, modern games significantly enhance children’s cognitive skills. Many video games, especially those with complex narratives or strategy-based gameplay, can help improve cognitive abilities like problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. For instance, strategy games like Minecraft require players to plan, manage resources, and create complex structures. These cognitive benefits directly contribute to overall development of children’s intellectual abilities, a feature often lacking in traditional games. Secondly, another compelling advantage of these games is that they equip children with vital technological skills. In such a highly digitised world, familiarity with technology is indispensable for future success. By engaging with modern games, children develop hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and an understanding of user interfaces.

In conclusion, while traditional games have their merits in nurturing physical health and social interaction, I suppose the other view is because modern games stimulate specific cognitive abilities and provide invaluable exposure to technological tools, making them a superior option for comprehensive development in the 21st century.
