Some individuals claim that video games are not more brilliant than cultural games in the aspect of assisting young people to elevate their abilities. Personally, I partly agree with this suggestion based on some major reasons that are explained in this essay.
On the one hand, there are some persuasive rationales that support the claim that traditional games play a crucial role in improving children’s cognitive abilities, particularly problem-solving and analytical thinking. A notable example is chess, which requires players to have a sharp-minded and strategic plan to win. While playing this game, youngsters will learn how to use their “knights” wisely, meaning they must think several moves ahead, predict the opponent’s strategies, and analyze each step carefully, which can help them assess situations more acutely and quickly produce solutions.
On the other hand, there are advantages associated with modern games that make them more useful than traditional games. In this day and age, the world is developing at a rapid pace, especially in urban areas. As a result, there are various infrastructures being built that limit the space of the children to participate in conventional games. Therefore, many new games have become an alternative option to assist children’s development. For example, Minecraft, developed by Mojang, provides a coding-free environment for all gamers to create their own virtual worlds and modify in-game items. This game not only fosters an early understanding of coding languages, as children can try experimenting with Redstone commands, but also contains unlimited items that youngsters can broaden their creativity by creating their own items, as they can combine several materials together. By interacting with such digital games, children can gain valuable technical skills that align with the demand of the job market.
In conclusion, although there are mixed opinions on whether modern games are better than traditional games in developing children’s ability, I believe that the balance is the most important. The authorities should both invest more in games to maximize children’s potential while implementing some effective policies to widen more open space to encourage children to take part in social activities.
