Band 6+: Many teenagers have their own smartphones. Does this situation have more advantages or more disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many adolescents are used to having mobile phones as a crucial part of their lives. This situation has both negative and positive aspects, on one side teenagers have an unlimited access to every kind of information needed, on the other hand they have become addicted to their smart devices.

Smartphones are particularly used among pupils for educational purposes. They serve as valuable learning tools, enabling students to access online studying resources, educational applications and research materials that can enhance their academic perfomance. For example, teenagers can use their mobile phones to attend virtual classes or complete assignments more efficiently. The next benefit that comes straight from using phones is them facilitating communication with family and peers. In cases of emergency, teenagers would be able to contact their parents immediately, therefore ensuring their safety. Apart from that, smartphones offer entertainment, including social media, music or games, which can help those boys and girls aged 13 to 19 unwind after stressful academic activities.

Despite the pros above, the cons of teenagers owning smartphones are considerable. The main critical issue is the distraction they cause. Excessive use of social media and gaming applications often leeds to a decline in focus on academic responsibilities, which can negatively impact students’ GPA. Futhermore, mobile phones are highly addictive, with many people spending redundant amount of time on their devices, often in return to their physical and mental well-being. For instance, prolonged screen time can disrupt sleep patterns and reduce face-to-face interactions with the others around. Additionally, smartphones drive adolescents into harmful content, such as cyberbullying or inappropriate material, which can lead to long-lasting psychological effects.

In conclusion, drawbacks of owning a smartphone from very early ages outweigh its benefits. If there is a no stop-point then adolescents may become more interested about their vitual lives rather than real one.
