Band 7+: Modern buildings change the character and appearance of towns and cities. The government should insist that new buildings be built in traditional styles to protect cultural identity. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

•Some towns and cities are changing quickly due to the rise of modern architecture. While some people believe the government should require new buildings to follow traditional designs to preserve cultural identity, I partly agree. Traditional styles are valuable, but modern architecture is also essential to meet current needs and show progress.

There are several reasons why preserving old buildings and using traditional designs in new ones is important. Firstly, traditional architecture helps people feel connected to their heritage and gives a city its unique character. For instance, using traditional materials or decorative styles can attract tourists, which boosts the local economy. Secondly, historical designs remind residents of their cultural roots, encouraging pride in their background. This connection to history can help younger generations learn about their identity and maintain the charm of the city over time.

However, I believe not all new buildings need to follow old styles. Modern architecture offers many benefits, such as improved energy efficiency, more functional space, and enhanced safety — all of which are essential as cities become more crowded and complex. In addition, forcing traditional designs on every building may limit innovation and slow down development. A balanced approach, where traditional and modern elements are combined, can create a fresh and dynamic cityscape that respects the past while embracing the future.

In conclusion, while traditional architecture plays a key role in preserving culture and identity, modern buildings are equally important for practical reasons and for reflecting progress.
