Band 5+: Modern communications mean that it's no longer necessary to write letters. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It has been observed that, rapid evolution in technology has changed the way people choose to communicate in today’s world. Although, some people might contend that the traditional ways to communicate were better and simple, as modern communications does not rely on writing letters or post cards. However, I agree to the fact that letter writing has seized to exist since the advent of new generation technology. Further in this essay, other views and my inclination with reasons will be discussed in the paragraphs below.

First of all, I do believe that new technology has made hand written letters obsolete. The reason is that new tech has made our lives so simple that now even cars start with a push of a button. Therefore, if anyone for a matter of fact wants to write to someone, they just need to pull out their phones and type it down, that’s how efficient and easy it has become to connect with someone. For instance, since the advent on the internet, typing emails and now days chatting with text messages are become the norms of communication among people. For instance, when Facebook, the most viral social media platform was founded in 2003, had started an age of live interaction that took place in forms of “Facebook Chats”. And, since then, all has changes, now we have WhatsApp, Instagram and iMessage which are commonly used by teenagers and adults alike for communication.

Furthermore, I still do contend that, people primarily the future forth coming generation should at least know how to draft a letter. Because, that is a very paramount skill to have for effective and thorough writing. For example, the millennials might have learnt to write a letter in school, and that’s the reason why they are good at drafting email’s and texting. They are very much aware of the tone and style to be used, to elaborate, they know that in an official setting it is best advised to use a formal tone and for a friend an informal voice. However, I have seen the lack of knowledge on this matter in the younger generation.

To conclude and summarize my position, although I agree, modern communications mean that it is no longer required to write letters, as the new innovative world, has a lot to offer and is much efficient, plus typing a text or email saves time and paper which is certainly beneficial for the environment. But, I do claim that the knowledge of drafting a letter should be taught to the younger generations to better understand the art of communication.
