In recent years, the number of companies that allow their workforce to work at home has significantly increased. This essay attempts to discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of this trend.
On the one hand, flexible working creates favorable conditions for both the workforce and companies. First and foremost, it is more cost-saving. For instance, companies can reduce expenses related to office space, utilities, and employee meals. Furthermore, workers can also save their expenditure on travel expenses. Secondly, working at home allows employees to have a more flexible work plan. For example, with less time spent commuting, individuals can engage in more personal activities, helping them to better manage their work-life balance. Finally, a home environment provides individuals with a more comfortable setting, which can boost their mental well-being and productivity.
On the other hand, there are some challenges associated with working at home. Firstly, firms/ companies might encounter more security risks due to less control over employees’ devices and networks. For instance, cybercriminals could exploit insecurities in home networks to access private company information. Secondly, the lack of direct supervision can encounter various challenges on work progress. For example, some employees might have irresponsible attitudes towards their tasks, which negatively impacts the organization’s processes. Finally, remote work limits face-to-face interaction between co-workers. As a result, some employees may feel isolated, which can harm their mental wellness.
In conclusion, while working at home has its own merits and demerits, I strongly believe that balancing between working at home and working on-site would be the most appropriate approach.
