With a rapid progress in the field of technology, most aspects of our lives have been directly influenced by it, with leisure industry being no exception. While home-based digital leisure may increase satisfaction, I still take the view that the negative effects of the far outweigh the positive ones.
To begin with, it should come as no surprise that many leisure pastimes are actively collaborated with technology so as to enhance the quality of the game and create all-encompassing experience. Virtual games industry might be a case in point which has already gained the ground among young people as it provides instant gratification. Besides, another desirable feature of technologically enhanced leisure has to do with convenience. In fact, a tablet intended to read a book may be a more appealing choice especially when it eliminates the need to carry heavy books. Added to this, they can download a wide range of books and enjoy reading on the go.
Having said that, I still believe that technology rather promotes negative consequences the most obvious of which is reduced well-being. Because of its addictive nature, children can get totally absorbed in texting and scrolling through social media mindless of the time or how hard they are tired. Little do we realize that all of this might lead to interrupted rest and poor sleeping habits, shorter attention span and poor posture thus adversely affecting the way their mind and body develop. Besides, another drawback of device-filled world can be felt in terms of social isolation. Children who play video games and those who spend a great deal of time going online, suffer from lack of human interaction as electronic communication is far from human companionship.
To sum up, although technology may prove some benefits in terms of choices and improved quality of the games, it does not mean that it is devoid of negative consequences. Therefore I believe that we should keep the balance and limit in mind if when incorporating technology into leisure.
