In recent times, elderly people prefer living in retirement houses rather than living with their children. From my perspective this is a positive effect on elderly people’s lives.
On the one hand, older people usually feel a sense of loneliness, when they retire from their job because they leave their usual routine and start a new lifestyle. For this reason, it can cause depression and stress. Therefore, retirement homes provide them with games and communication with people of their own age in order to not feel lonely. Furthermore, when people communicate with individuals their age, they are able to understand each other easily because different generations do not always relate to each other due to their own experiences and viewpoints. For instance, studies have shown that older adults who participate in social clubs with people their own age report higher levels of happiness.
On the other hand, older adults may face challenges related to the cost of medical care. Retirement homes ensure that residents have access to healthcare, with professional staff attending to their needs. Also, adult children are often busy with work and family obligations, making it difficult for them to take care of their parents constantly. As an example, there was a story about an American woman whose adult children unable to take care of her because of their schedules, so she moved into a retirement home.
In conclusion, although people believe that living with children is better for elderly people, I believe that retirement homes can enhance their happiness and health.
