Although strategies and policies were introduced by the government, exotic gases emitted by vehicles become the stumbling block in enhancing air condition. Bicycle, which was the main transportation in the last decade, loses its position in the emergence of other means of commuting, causing the authorities to impose extra taxes on drivers to escalate the motives to cycle, as it can potentially combat global warming.
The advancement of modern ways of transit leads to the obsolescence of bikes. Traveling by bus or train saves time and is far more comfortable, especially in extreme weathers, allowing passengers to complete works productively in the meantime. For instance, commuters can listen to podcast or read a book to enrich their life, which is too dangerous to do while cycling. Similarly, if people choose an easy way to travel to and from workplace, they can save energy and work more efficiently or focus on their study, contributing to a greater outcome.
To promote bicycle, the government must increase the cost of driving cars and traveling by public transport. The higher the cost of driving, the lower the tendency that residents will commute by car. A notable example shown by the propaganda of Malaysia’s government, as soon as the allowances given to train users are taken away and the charges at tolls become higher, citizens will find alternatives to save cost. At the same time, money collected can be used to construct cycling lanes and invest in the productions of bikes, reducing the risk and cost of cycling, which leads to the upsurge of cyclers.
In summary, certain features of advanced transportation allow human to adapt to the fast-paced nature of urban life, which means that they become reluctant to cycle. In order to address the problem of air pollution caused by vehicles, the government opt to improve road conditions using the taxes collected from drivers, hence cycling activities will be stimulated.
