Band 7+: Nowadays we have become a throwaway society with where it is common to throw away devices and gadgets instead of repairing them. Why is this happening and what are the effects of this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Currently, it has become increasingly common for people to purchase new items frequently. Unfortunately, this practice also encourages them to discard old, but still usable items. This trend has a detrimental impact on the environment. This essay will examine the two main factors contributing to this development.

This trend may be due to individuals lacking the crucial skills required to repair items. Specifically, in Russia, where subjects in school were held in which students acquired vital life skills, including the ability to repair damaged objects. However, at present, a stronger emphasis is placed on academic achievement. As a result, individuals are unable to repair devices, and therefore, there is no choice for people to discard them. Additionally, as the general standard of living has improved significantly, many individuals no longer perceive the need to conserve money.

This trend can have two detrimental effects on human life. First, environmental impact should be taken into consideration. After the rise of the throwaway society, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of products made annually. In particular, the manufacturing process requires the consumption of numerous fuels, such as oil, as well as the construction of large industrial facilities at the expense of natural habitats, which has contributed to ecological issues. Also, a society built around consumption might show the degraded personal qualities of its members. Specifically, this can lead people to live a lifestyle characterized by excessive spending, where they prefer to purchase a new item instead of repairing an old one. Eventually, it’s destroying the values that define human beauty and is slowing down social progress.

In summary, a society in which people discard products instead of repairing them arises from a lack of repair skills and a desire for improved quality of life. As a result, the environment and human values have been severely affected.
