Band 8+: Older generations often hold some traditional ideas on the correct way of life, thought and behaviour. Most people argue that these are not helpful for younger generations to prepare for modern life.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, many argue that traditional views on lifestyle, thought, and behaviour held by older generations are no longer helpful for younger people preparing for modern life. While it is true that some customs have become outdated, I firmly believe that many core values passed down from our ancestors continue to provide vital guidance for today’s youth.

First of all, certain traditional beliefs indeed clash with modern society. Gender stereotypes, such as men being the sole breadwinners while women should be homemakers, unfairly restrict individual potential. For instance, the idea that women should avoid STEM fields or that men should be discouraged from pursuing artistic careers limits their personal choices and fails to reflect the equality found in modern life. Similarly, outdated marital customs like “arranged marriages” often force individuals into lifelong commitments without regard for their personal feelings, undermining emotional well-being. Such practices are clearly incompatible with modern principles of equality and personal freedom. Nowadays, when children are mature enough, they have the right to decide allfor themselves all matters surrounding their lives by themselves, including marriage., t Those prejudices are no longer appropriate.

Nonetheless, I believe most traditional values passed down by older generations remain highly valued. Ethical principles, such as filial piety, respect for teachers, and deference to elders, build a foundation of character and social harmony. The role of morality in life that the previous generations emphasized is completely reasonable, as it is always the key factor in shaping and developing a person. To achieve success, one must first cultivate good character, strong morality, and a clear understanding of personal role in society. The emphasis on education and lifelong learning continues to be a fundamental principle. The elders believe that learning is the key to opening the fastest path to success, and I believe that in today’s modern society or in the future, that truth will never fade away. As society develops more and more, the competition becomes higher, then only knowledge can bring us more opportunities, only knowledge can help us develop widely.

In conclusion, while certain outdated customs, especially those enforcing gender inequality or parental control over marriage should be reformed, many traditional values concerning ethics and education remain valuable in modern life.
