Band 6+: People nowadays work hard to buy more things. This has made our daily lives generally more comfortable, but many traditional values and customs have been lost and this is a pity. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s fast life, it is very well observed that the aim of most of the hard-working people is to work for a better future for themselves by earning more and buying more things for their own comfort. It seems that the world is transcending slowly into a materialistic future, where the values and traditions which are taught by our cultures have no meaning.

It would be very conservatory if it is argued that the matter of materialism has no value in our lives and should be disregarded. The world’s technology, and population are growing rapidly at a very fast rate. Considering such a massive population, their basic needs have to be fulfilled by someone. That could be anyone, from a drainage cleaner, to an engineer, a mechanic to even a politician. Everybody has their own sets of responsibilities sticked on to them, which includes taking care of yourself and your family and contributing to the society in a certain way. No matter how hard working someone is, at the end of the day, people need some rest. It is very obvious from the above statements that a person should have at least a little quality time for himself, during which he/she would feel comfortable and fulfilled.

Ancient culture had taught us one of the wisest qualities a human could ever have, that is, the ability to let go of this materialistic world. Traditional values pass the message to give up on the feeling of greed and lead a life which is much more pleasant, enjoyable, and hassle-free to live. However, people nowadays are in greed to buy more and more things for themselves in order to live comfortably. People are losing their culture’s values and teachings on the way to materialism.

Nowadays, people think, that they are identified by their identity card issued by the authorities. However, a person’s biggest identity of him/herself is his religion and culture. Even the great civilizations of the past had religion and culture as their driving factor in expansion and establishing their greatness. We are merely ordinary people.

Even though there are a large number of people engaged in gaining material wealth, there are some who keep a balance between work and life. They enjoy both material wealth, as well as cherish their traditions and values. Hence, both materialism and traditions are necessary for a human to become better as a whole, but should be neutral and balanced.
