Band 7+: People's character is influenced by the environment rather than genetics. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

People’s character is more influenced by the environment than genetics, as socialization, experiences, and learning play a crucial role in shaping who we are. Many believe that individuals are influenced more by the environment than by genetics. I fully agree with this notion, and in the following paragraphs, I will justify my stance with reasonable arguments.

In this era, many motivational speakers have a significant impact on others, inspiring them to follow in their footsteps and adopt their good habits. For instance, in India, cricket is a major sport, and cricketer M.S. Dhoni has a vast fan following. His biographical movie showcases his struggle to become a successful cricketer, highlighting his hardship, perseverance, never-give-up attitude, and patience, which have helped him achieve his goals. Additionally, children learn from their parents, teachers, and friends. From parents, they can learn ethics, morals, discipline, and proper behavior. From teachers, they can gain knowledge in their respective fields and learn from their mistakes to avoid repeating them. Therefore, I believe parents and teachers are the two most influential figures in a child’s life, as children tend to imitate what they see. However, certain traits, such as a short temper or natural aptitude for business, can also be inherited genetically from their parents.

On the other hand, I believe that while not all are born evil, many are born with potential. All babies are naive at birth, but the environment in which they are raised significantly impacts whether they become good or bad individuals. If they grow up surrounded by good people, they can learn valuable lessons and achieve success in life. Conversely, if they lack positive influences, they may become rowdy or turn to crime, as their circumstances and associations shape their future. For example, the famous businessman Anil Ambani, despite his wealth, became entangled with Bollywood actors and actresses, leading to poor decisions and ultimately resulting in his bankruptcy.

In conclusion, while genetics may provide the foundation for certain traits and predispositions, it is the environment that plays a pivotal role in shaping an individual’s character. The influence of motivational figures, parents, teachers, and peers, along with the experiences and challenges one faces, largely determines whether a person develops positive or negative traits. As evidenced by figures like M.S. Dhoni and Anil Ambani, the environment can significantly impact personal development and success. Therefore, fostering a positive, supportive environment is crucial for nurturing good character and enabling individuals to reach their full potential.
