Band 8+: Pollution and other environmental problems are resulting from a country's developing and becoming richer. Some think this cannot be avoided. To what extent do you agree and disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is undeniable that economic development often leads to pollution and environmental damage. While some argue that these issues are unavoidable, I partially disagree. Although environmental problems are common during industrial growth, countries can reduce them with sustainable practices and proper policies.

Development typically brings industrialization and urbanization, which are major causes of environmental harm. Factories release toxic gases and waste, while expanding cities result in deforestation and loss of biodiversity. For instance, rapid economic growth in countries like China and India has caused severe air pollution and contaminated water sources. This occurs when economic progress is prioritized over environmental conservation, often in the early stages of development.

However, these issues are not unavoidable. With effective strategies, countries can balance growth and environmental protection. For example, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar can replace fossil fuels, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Governments can also enforce strict regulations to control industrial pollution and promote green technologies. Sweden and Germany, for instance, have shown that sustainable development is achievable through investment in eco-friendly policies and innovation.

Moreover, adopting sustainable practices not only protects the environment but also supports long-term economic benefits. Green industries create jobs while preserving natural resources. Costa Rica, for example, has developed its economy through renewable energy and conservation efforts, attracting tourists and investors. This demonstrates that protecting the environment can also boost a nation’s reputation and economic success.

In conclusion, while development often leads to environmental challenges, these problems are not inevitable. By adopting sustainable practices and prioritizing green policies, countries can achieve both economic prosperity and environmental protection. Therefore, I believe environmental damage is preventable with proper action.
