Band 8+: Schools are spending more time teaching traditional subjects such as history. Some people think they should rather spend more time in teaching skills that can help students find a job. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The question of whether schools should prioritize traditional subjects like history over job-oriented subjects has sparked a topic of debate. While some argue that schools should focus more on teaching job-related subjects rather than traditional ones, I completely disagree with this view as I believe there should be a balance between these two areas.

Granted, there are several compelling arguments for the emphasis on teching job-related skills. In today’s competitive job market, employers tend to seek candidates who are adaptive to constant changes and proficient at using technological tools. For instance, in the information technology sector, proficiency in coding languages, data analysis, and cybersecurity is highly valued. Therefore, by incorporating job-based skills into the formal curriculum, schools can equip students with skills such as digital literacy and critical thinking, which not only enable them to adapt to modern workplaces but also enhance their ability to navigate complex, real-life scenarios.

Nevertheless, I am convinced that the study of history is of equal importance. First of all, studying history offers invaluable insights gleaned from past events. As students understand how societies and individuals confronted challenges, they gain the ability to make judicious decisions and avoid the repetition of errors. For instance, learning about the causes of past conflicts can equip students with foundational knowledge to approach complex issues with a well-informed perspective. Additionally, history establishes a profound connection for students with their predecessors. By grasping their struggles and accomplishments of their forebears, students are filled with a sense of pride and belonging and motivated to make positive contributions to their communities as well as preserve these legacies for future generations.

In conclusion, while job-related skills are undeniably crucial in today’s fast-paced world, disregarding such traditional subjects as History would undermine students’ holistic development. Therefore, it is imperative for schools to strike a balance between these two areas to ensure that students are equipped with both practical knowledg and a profound understanding of cultural heritage.
