Traditional cultures in many countries are on the brink of disappearance, because of the development of the world today. As a result, some people believe these traditions should be kept, while others argue that they should no longer be maintained. Both sides of this issue will be discussed in this essay, and my opinion will be given.
On the one hand, many individuals oppose the preservation of local traditions. One major reason is cultural lag. For example, some older people believe that men are more capable than women. Because of this belief, they think that only men should work outside to support the family, while women should stay at home to take care of children and parents. However, nowadays, everyone can access education equally, so these traditional ideas should be eliminated. Instead, both paid work and household chores should be shared by everyone. Another reason is that certain traditions harm the environment, such as the Loykratong festival. This festival, which involves floating decorated baskets on rivers, often causes pollution along the river because of plastic waste. Moreover, some areas may experience a flood due to obstruction of drain. Because of these two reasons, many individuals are unwilling to preserve local traditions.
On the other hand, many people, including myself, believe that preserving these local traditions are extremely important. Foremost among these is that these cultural practices may bring between every generation together. For example, the festival is the New Year celebration of Thai people which allows family members to return home and share their valuable memories. In addition, participating in this activity helps strengthen relationships between families. Another reason is that unique cultures often attract tourists and support the local economy. For instance, when many visitors reserve hotels to experience the New Year celebration in Japan, both local residents and the government earn more income. For these reasons, many people support maintaining local traditions.
In conclusion, although some local cultures lead to several drawbacks, they also provide many clear benefits. In my opinion, these traditions are highly crucial and should be preserved for future generations.
