In this day and age, advertising has become ubiquitous and is regarded as pivotal for business success. Nevertheless, some individuals claim that consumers’ purchases are predominantly driven by their needs, thereby rendering advertising unnecessary. I somewhat disagree with this view for the following reasons that will be explained in this essay.
On the one hand, people are often inclined towards frugality and tend to make purchases solely based on necessity. Then, some items seem superfluous and are unlike to be bought which means that at that point it is not yet important. The evidence clearly shows us that especially when going to market, essential goods such as milk, and meat are frequently purchased without reliance on advertising, unlike non-essential items like jewelry or apparel that necessitate continuous promotional efforts.
On the other hand, we cannot deny the importance of advertising. Advertising brings many benefits to customers. First, advertising allows consumers to find out information about the product they want to buy through commercial exchanges and then decide whether to buy it or not. Secondly, it safeguards consumer interests by obliging companies to provide assurances such as warranties and return policies before promoting their products. For instance, when buying advertised products on platforms like Shopee, customers are guaranteed a complete product warranty and a refund policy in case of dissatisfaction. It is palpable from this example that advertising plays a crucial role in offering convenience and protection to consumers.
Summing up, people tend to preference buying goods based on immediate needs. However, the role of advertising is extremely important as it brings many benefits and rights to consumers. Therefore, people should admit that advertising is really necessary in human shopping.
