Band 8+: Some believe that students should begin learning a language very early in school while others think these subjects should be taught later. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

There is an ongoing debate regarding the right time to begin learning a language, with some arguing for an early start and others supporting the idea that it should be taught later. Although later exposure to foreign languages may have some benefits, in my opinion , introducing languages at an early age is more advantageous as children tend to absorb information better.

On one hand, some people think that it is better to study linguistic subjects at a later stage of education as it may be easier to learn grammatical structures and certain rules based on a strong foundation of their first language. They argue that a target language can be acquired with less effort, allowing learners to dedicate more time to practice rather than theoretical knowledge. For instance, recent surveys conducted among Central Asian students have shown that the majority of learners find relying on their mother tongue efficient when familiarizing themselves with the rules of the target language. From this perspective, later exposure to language subjects appears to be more effective compared to learning them at an early age.

On the other hand, early exposure to a foreign language can have several benefits for students. Cognitive abilities of the human brain are flexible at a young age, making language acquisition process more straightforward. Studies have demonstrated that children’s brains are able to change and form new connections which allows them to understand new information such as new words and grammatical structures in an effective and quick way compared to late language learners. Furthermore, an early start of language learning can make the process less complicated and more productive during the critical period of development. Thus, if an appropriate pedagogical approach is used, early language education can be highly effective.

In conclusion, while some argue that children should be introduced to linguistic subjects at a later stage, in my opinion, an earlier start provides significant educational benefits. By considering the mental abilities, early exposure to language learning can considerably enhance their language skills and fluency.
