Nowadays, space exploration has pushed the boundaries of knowledge. However, the debate over governments spending money on space exploration versus investment in public services is a longstanding issue. From my vantage point, the benefits of space exploration overrule its downsides.
The importance of public services can never be overstated. Investing in health care and education leads to the improvement public well-being. By improving public services, we will have a healthier population, and an equal educational system which improve the quality of life. On the other hand, these lead to economic growth. In other words, the educated and healthy population can be more productive and contribute to boosting the economy. This could be vital but has short-term benefits for our society and it is not enough.
Although both investment in public services and exploration of space can be beneficial, I believe in the importance of space exploration. The challenges of going to space have led to technological innovations that improve our daily lives. For instance, communication satellites, Global position systems (GPS), and improving medical imaginal technology that these are all achievements of space discoveries. On the other hand, space exploration can have long-term benefits for humanity by discovering new habitats for life on another planet. Nowadays, we are dealing with some serious problems that have led to the destruction of our only home. It is a burden on our shoulders to conserve our planet for future generations or at least find a new one for them. Last but not least, discovering space can improve international collaboration and bring us together as global citizens. This can act as a bridge between nations and foster a sense of shared purpose and accomplishment, breaking down political barriers and building trust. This peace and diplomacy are of great importance.
On balance, while investment in both exploring space and public services has been polarizing people, I consider exploring space as a more important factor. We are responsible to future generations as well as current generations.
