In contemporary society, remote work is becoming increasingly prevalent. Despite this, some critics claim that this is profitable for workers, not for managers. I completely agree with this statement. In my opinion, while work from home can provide employees with flexible work schedules and better work-life balance, employees still have to deal with various disadvantages such as cultural differences and decreased teamwork.
On the one hand, it is factual that remote work is advantageous for employees. First of all, it can offer workers greater flexibility. To be more specific, when working at home, people will have to commute less and have personalized work hours. Secondly, they might also decide their ideal working environment. For instance, some parents with newborns can work while taking care of their children at the same time. As a result, this will better their personal performances at work.
On the other hand, there is a myriad of factors that detrimentally affect the employers. To begin with, as telecommuting consists of people with different geographical locations, it varies in cultural aspects and timezones. Consequently, administrators will have to deal with language barrier and difficulties relating to schedules, which will ultimately reduce the productivity. In addition, this virtual work form can deteriorate the relationships between employees and employers due to lack of face-to-face interactions. This can be attributed to the absence of personal connection which may make it harder to build personal trust between individuals.
To conclude, although remote work does provide ideal workplace and great flexibility for employees, enhancing their performance in the workplace, it can decrease work efficiency and hinder people relationships.
