Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 8+: Some of the local languages are becoming extinct. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rapid spread of international trends in food, fashion, culture, language, advertising, festivals, sports, and technology is reshaping societies across the world. While some view this as a threat to local identity, I believe globalization is neither purely positive nor purely negative – it carries both benefits and costs that societies must consciously manage.

On the positive side, international trends have opened doors to opportunities once unimaginable. Technology has connected distant communities, allowing people to access education, healthcare information, and economic opportunities regardless of location. Global fashion and food trends have introduced diversity, giving people more choices and exposing them to new ideas and tastes they might never have encountered otherwise. International sports events, like the Olympics or FIFA World Cup, unite people across borders, fostering a sense of shared humanity and friendly competition. Similarly, the spread of English and other widely used languages has made international communication, trade, and collaboration easier than ever before, boosting economies and creating jobs.

However, this same process has a darker side. Local languages are disappearing at an alarming rate as younger generations prioritize globally dominant languages for career advancement. Traditional festivals and customs are increasingly overshadowed by commercialized global celebrations like Valentine’s Day or Halloween. Local cuisines face pressure from fast-food chains and homogenized global menus, while indigenous fashion and crafts struggle to compete with mass-produced international brands. Advertising, dominated by multinational corporations, often promotes a single narrow standard of beauty, success, and lifestyle, eroding diverse cultural values and self-identities rooted in local tradition and regional heritage.

In my opinion, the real issue is not globalization itself but the lack of balance. Cultural exchange enriches societies when it complements rather than completely replaces indigenous identity. Countries that actively preserve their languages, support local artisans, and celebrate traditional festivals alongside embracing global innovation tend to thrive both culturally and economically, maintaining a strong sense of self while still progressing forward.

In conclusion, international trends are not inherently negative – they offer connectivity, innovation, and economic growth. Yet when local traditions are neglected entirely, communities lose the very identity that makes them unique and valuable. The challenge for modern societies is to embrace global progress while safeguarding cultural heritage, ensuring that globalization and local identity coexist rather than compete for dominance.
