Band 7+: Some people believe that capital punishment should not be used. Others, however, argue that it should be allowed for the most serious crimes.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that capital punishment should be abolished, while others argue that it remains necessary as a deterrent for serious crimes. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and give my opinion on the matter.

On the one hand, those in favor of abolishing capital punishment argue that it is an inhumane practice. They believe that it is morally wrong when taking a person’s life, even in the case of serious criminals. Especially for those who have been wrongly convicted. This is particularly the case for individuals who may be sentenced to death and later found to be innocent.

On the other hand, proponents of capital punishment argue that it serves as a powerful deterrent against crimes such as murder and terrorism. They believe that people who know they could face death when committing the crimes think twice before they committed serious crimes. This is particularly the case for individuals who are hardened criminals and do not respond to other forms of punishment. To be more specific, the death penalty is seen as the ultimate consequence, which may help maintain order in society by discouraging criminal behavior.

In conclusion, while capital punishment may act as a deterrent for certain crimes, the moral concerns and the risk of executing innocent individuals make it a controversial practice. Therefore, it is safe to say that it would be more effective to focus on alternative measures, such as life imprisonment without parole, to ensure humanity for prisoners who have committed serious crimes.
