Many argue that students should learn literature from their own country, apart from others. I both agree and disagree with this idea considering it probs and cons.
The most important reason for children to learn their country’s literature is that they can get in touch with their nation’s cultural values. By identifying and learning it, children can get acquainted with the masterpieces of their country’s literature which is best suit with them to organize their ego and personality. Moreover, they can acknowledge the length of their literature’s history. Take example from Vietnamese, they still enjoy many literature’s works from the past such as “Truyện Kiều” or “Bình Ngô Đại Cáo”, those are magneficent work of art that still remain valuable until today. Another reason is that by preferring their nation’s literary works, they can support the author, which can benefits their nation’s literary background.
In the other hand, enjoying other nation’s literary work can also provide them the knowledge from worldwide scope. Reading international literature isn’t bad as long as you don’t absorb negative information. Recently i really enjoy masterpieces from other nation including “The song of Achilles” and “The Miracles of the Namiya General Store” which can be seen as books with positive information with catching storytelling and bring us invaluable meanings. But some of other country’s literature affect the child badly if they let their guard down, so keep in mind that you only receive the data for entertaining, don’t take it too serious.
In conclusion, children can both enjoy their country literature and other countries literature as long as it benefits them with meaningful values.
