Band 9: Some people believe that it is the responsibility of individuals to take care of their own health and diet. Others however believe that governments should make sure that their citizens have a healthy diet. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

An increasing concern for many governments around the world is the declining health of their citizens due to poor diets. While some individuals believe that it is the government’s responsibility to improve national health, others assert that it is up to each person to take charge of their own health. This essay will argue that individuals should have personal choice and autonomy, while governments must implement public health initiatives to support their citizens.

There is no doubt that individuals must take responsibility for their diet and health. The key argument supporting this is the fact that adults have free will and make their own choices regarding what they eat and how much exercise they engage in. Although children are becoming less healthy, it is ultimately the responsibility of their parents to provide nutritious evening meals and encourage them to avoid junk food and sugary snacks throughout the day. For instance, in 2015, a report by the Organic Trade Association indicated that sales of organic products reached over $43 billion, reflecting a growing preference for healthier food options among consumers.

Despite these arguments, there is also a case for supporting government intervention. Many people today often have little choice but to rely on fast food or ready-made meals that are high in salt, sugar, and fat due to work pressures. Therefore, the government should regulate the ingredients of such foods. Additionally, governments spend substantial amounts of tax money treating health problems in hospitals. It would be logical to invest in preventive measures, such as campaigns promoting exercise and healthy eating. For example, Mexico’s tax on sugary drinks, implemented in 2014, introduced a tax of one peso per liter on sugary beverages to combat rising obesity rates.

In conclusion, I would argue that while individuals must ultimately take responsibility for what they eat, governments also play a vital role, as they can regulate the food supply that encourages poor dietary choices. Only through this combination can we improve public health.
