In today’s world, the ethical implications of the confinement of animals in zoos have sparked controversies. While some argue it is brutal to keep the wildlife in confined spaces, I believe that zoos are far more beneficial as they play a crucial role in conservation and education.

One significant concern regarding keeping animals in enclosures is that the creatures can be negatively affected due to the limited spaces. While animals in the wild can roam, hunt, and follow natural behaviors, areas that zoos provide are often small and artificial, which potentially lead to significantly harmful effects on the wildlife. For instance, confined spaces can cause stress and unnatural behaviors like pacing or excessive sleeping in zoo animals. Another major issue is that several zoos currently tend to prioritize visitors’ amusement over animal welfare. In detail, they often implement exploitation and abuse into animals in an attempt to create more entertainment for higher revenue. For example, in certain wildlife parks, elephants are trained to perform tricks (e.g., balancing on balls, painting) using harsh training methods. As a result, zoos are considered to be forbidden because of numerous serious consequences they bring to animals.

Notwithstanding the concerns, the benefits of zoos are substantial. One of the most crucial advantages is there contribution to helping protect species threatened by habitat destruction and illegal hunting. With special areas designed for specific types of animals, they can provide sufficient safety and suitable environment for the wildlife. For example, giant pandas were endangered, but breeding programs in zoos increased their population, improving their status to “vulnerable”. Another important benefit of animal enclosures is that they present individuals with educational value. Zoos allow people, especially children, to observe animals up close and learn about their behavior and habitats. Thus, this fosters a deeper appreciation for nature and encourages conservation efforts.

To sum up, although the drawbacks of zoos are considerably harmful, their role in conservation and education makes their existence valuable.
