Some people say that students who are most successful in their exams should be rewarded, while others say those who show progress should be rewarded instead.
Rewarding students who reach better scores than others can encourage students to study harder. For instance, a student who is not successful in his exams can be motivated due to a reward. Moreover, students who achieve the highest scores will want to maintain their consistency; with that factor, not only unsuccessful students but successful students will be stimulated to work harder. In light of this competition, the schools’ average score rate will rise. As a result, both individual performance and overall academic success in schools can improve over time.
On the other hand, giving an award to students who show progress also can work. It can encourage students who recently started to study. For example, if a low-scoring student shows progress in his exams, giving him an award can motivate him. This kind of encouragement can increase their confidence and make them more interested in their lessons. However, high-scoring students can be disturbed because of this. Successful students cannot improve themselves as much as low-scoring students do, because they already achieve high points. That’s why good students feel like they do not receive the recognition they deserve for their achievements. In some cases, this situation may even reduce their motivation over time. Therefore, awarding the student who reaches the highest score is more logical.
In conclusion, a rewarding system in schools sometimes can push students to be better in their exams. Nevertheless, caution is needed while organizing a rewarding system. Otherwise, such disagreements can occur. Overall, schools should carefully balance fairness and motivation when deciding how to reward students.
