Most of the people, these days, hold the opinion that the primary role of schools is to teach academic subjects and they neglect the significance of practical skills. I totally disagree with this opinion and think that schools are in charge of preparing individuals for life both academically as well as practically.
On the one hand, some people argue that schools are responsible for teaching only academic subjects including math, chemistery, biology and others which can be fundamental in each person’s future professions. It might be because, If students are taught only these subjects at schools without wasting time for other unnecessary stuff, they can become proffesionals in their own chosen fields in the long run. Future doctors, for instance, should have a deep understanding of chemistery and biology to be the best health-care personnel. In addition, practical skills can be learned out of schools by parents or apprenticing children to specialists. Thus, it may seem waste of time for schools teach practical things.
On the other hand, it is undeniable that schools must prepare individuals for life not only academically but also practically. There are several skills which everybody needs in life regardless of their profession, cooking, gardening and time management, financial literacy, communication being the most common ones. These skills prepare the young for the future life and can be vital in everyone’s day-to-day life as well as work places. Therefore, at schools there should be specialists and qualified teachers to teach these subjects.
In conclusion, though practical skills can be learned during out of school hours, I believe that they are equally important as academic subjects and are necessary to prepare pupils for future life.
