It is widely argued that the rising utilization of computers and smartphones will cause a decline in verbal and oral language skills. This essay will be arguing that the use of technology for academic purposes and everyday conversations, will be resulting in a decrease of grammatical and spelling knowledge, while also resulting in sloppy handwriting.
First of all, using computers for academic purposes is more convenient and simpler. Using a laptop for writing is way more efficient and quicker than handwriting. The simplicity can also be attributed to the increased presence of artificial intelligence in academic areas. This way, people do not have to go through the trial-and-error process, which can result in incapability to understand what is correct and what is not. For instance, with the use of CHAT GPT research has shown that students no longer write their written assignments themselves, resulting in inadequate use of language from students in oral or written exams and even incomprehensible handwriting.
On the other hand, using mobile phones for communication can also contribute to a drop on language skills. Making appointments, communicating with co-workers or friends, and many other everyday activities are now done by smartphones, all of which have autocorrecting and speech-to-text tools. With the use of these any sentence can be corrected in a matter of seconds, leading to systematic use of grammatical errors in everyday life. This seems to be the case, in many English speakers as studies have illustrated that a large number of people cannot differentiate when they should use “they” or “their”.
To summarize, I strongly agree that the use of computers and smartphones will negatively impact handwritten language and grammar or spelling. Based on the evidence, AI is already negatively impacting language skills in academia, mobile phones also are amplifying neglect of crucial grammatical rules.
