Band 9: Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes . Others believe going to classes should be optional for students . which point of view do agree with ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Whether university students should be obliged to attend classes or be free to choose their own study schedule is a topic of ongoing debate. While compulsory attendance ensures academic discipline and structured learning, I firmly believe that class attendance should be optional. This approach respects students’ independence and better reflects the nature of higher education.

On the one hand, mandatory attendance policies are often justified by the belief that regular participation promotes better academic performance. In many subjects – particularly those requiring practical demonstrations or collaborative discussions – being physically present enables students to engage actively with the material. Professors can clarify complex concepts immediately, and students can benefit from peer interaction, which is difficult to replicate independently. Furthermore, compulsory attendance may encourage younger students, who are still transitioning from secondary school, to develop consistent study habits.

Nevertheless, despite these advantages, I strongly support the idea that attending classes should be optional. University education is fundamentally different from schooling in that it aims to foster independent thinking, self-discipline, and responsibility. By allowing students to decide whether to attend lectures, institutions recognise that individuals learn in different ways. Some students grasp material more effectively through self-study, online resources, or practical application rather than passive listening in a lecture hall. Forcing such students to attend classes may waste their time and reduce learning efficiency.

In addition, making attendance voluntary motivates educators to improve the quality of their teaching. When students come to class by choice, it is because the sessions offer genuine value – interactive activities, engaging explanations, or insightful perspectives beyond what textbooks provide. This competitive element enhances the academic environment as a whole. Moreover, many university students balance studies with part-time jobs, internships, or family responsibilities. Flexible attendance policies allow them to manage these obligations without being penalised, ultimately producing more well-rounded graduates.

In conclusion, although mandatory attendance can support academic structure, I believe that university students should be given the freedom to choose whether to attend classes. This approach not only respects their autonomy but also encourages more effective learning and higher-quality teaching.
