Nowadays, the use of plastic products has become increasingly popular, such as plastic bags for shopping and takeaway food containers. However, plastic materials can cause serious harm to the environment. Some people argue that plastic products should be replaced by environmentally friendly materials like glass, while others believe that plastic should continue to be used. In this essay, I will discuss both sides before giving my opinion.
On one hand, plastic materials have many negative effects on the environment. They are difficult to recycle and take hundreds of years to decompose. Furthermore, many people dispose of plastic waste irresponsibly, leading to pollution in seas, lakes, and streets. For instance, when people throw plastic waste into the ocean, marine animals may mistakenly eat it, thinking it is food. This can cause serious harm or even death to sea creatures, disrupting the ecosystem.
On the other hand, completely replacing plastic products with other materials may not always be practical or efficient. Some products made from plastic are lightweight, durable, and waterproof, making them ideal for everyday use. For example, if takeaway boxes were made from paper instead of plastic, they would not be able to hold liquids like soup. Similarly, using glass as an alternative could increase product costs and make transportation more difficult due to its fragility.
In my opinion, I agree that we should gradually replace plastic products with more environmentally friendly materials whenever possible. If we continue to rely heavily on plastic, environmental pollution will worsen and biodiversity will decrease. However, the replacement process should be done carefully by considering product efficiency and cost. Additionally, people should change their habits by reducing plastic use, reusing containers, and supporting recycling initiatives.
In conclusion, plastic products have significant drawbacks for the environment. While replacing them with eco-friendly materials can reduce pollution, it is not a simple or complete solution. The most effective approach is to minimize plastic use and promote recycling while developing sustainable alternatives.
