Nowadays, the notion of gender equality is very popular. People have started establishing the opinion that the same number of boys and girls should be enrolled in each discipline of universities. This essay agrees with the statement to a large extent, but will argue that doing so is not always practically possible.
The proponents of the idea have valid reasons to have such a belief. One apparent logic is to give both genders the same opportunities. When both are getting equal education, the chances of being treated fairly in the employment market will increase eventually, and whichever side was suppressed previously for any reason will have equal employment opportunities, as the balance between the population will be maintained. Similarly, when such a balance is present in a society, both men and women will be able to participate equally for the well-being of the nation. For example, if there are limited seats available in a company, hiring equal number of candidates will decrease any inherent bias towards any gender. The Shell company is hiring more females than males to achieve the balance. So, to get an equal opportunity world, some drastic steps need to be taken quickly.
Opponents, however, believe that achieving the balance sometimes creates disorder in other professions. From this standpoint, sometimes, the nature of the discipline puts a limit on the balance, which means either the delicacy of the profession prevails, or an unequal proportion of the population overshadows other ideas. For instance, the gynecology department requires a woman’s involvement more than men, especially in countries like Pakistan, where women are comfortable with female doctors, because of the religious obligations or their conservative views. Dreaming about equality is not possible, and to keep the economy running, we need to have more female doctors than males.
To conclude, the idea that educational institutions should have the same number of men and women holds true to a large extent, but not possible everywhere. In my opinion, implementing any such idea forcefully might have a few negative implications.
