Band 9: Some people consider that teachers should focus on academics more than motivating students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people assert that teachers should prioritize academic instruction over motivating students. I strongly disagree with this view. While academic content is essential, student motivation plays a critical role in both immediate learning outcomes and long-term personal development.

First and foremost, motivation significantly enhances academic performance. No matter how well a subject is taught, students are unlikely to absorb or retain information if they lack the motivation to learn. Motivation fuels attention, effort, and persistence—factors that directly impact academic success. For example, a student who is weak in mathematics may begin to improve simply because their teacher encourages them regularly and creates a positive classroom environment. This emotional support can inspire the student to try harder and eventually achieve better results.

Secondly, motivation helps students develop habits and mindsets that extend beyond academic tests. When teachers inspire their learners, they also nurture qualities such as self-confidence, curiosity, and independence. These traits not only enhance academic learning but also contribute to a student’s overall growth. A clear example of this is seen in Finland’s education system, where teachers are trained to support students emotionally and academically. As a result, Finnish students perform consistently well in international exams and also report high levels of well-being and motivation.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that motivation should be an essential part of a teacher’s role. Focusing solely on academics may lead to short-term results, but a motivated student is more likely to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. The best education happens when academic instruction and motivation go hand in hand.
