The widespread use of modern technology has induced a debate where some people assume that advanced technology will totally replace newspapers and magazines.
Personally, I partly agree with the assumption because of some reasons which will be explained in this essay.
In a world where information constantly circulates, the key factor attracting public attention is speed. Digital reading offers readers a chance to keep up with the constant flow of information within minutes, not days like newspapers and magazines. Moreover, most digital information sites stay active on social media which means their information is usually deliberately wanted by customers because the algorithm of social media tends to pop up news related to readers’ hobbies. From the publishers’ points of view, the advantages of this digital replacement is more than that. Digital distribution is much more profitable and less risky than conventional methods. By publishing information online, publishers not only spread the news rapidly and widely but also significantly decrease the cost of printing and solve the problem of unsold copies efficiently.
Even so, the use of newspapers and magazines will not vanish totally in the modern day. It is undeniable that digital information offers readers instant news and personal suitability, but it often contains false information. However, the core value of traditional news is validity. Unlike uncontrolled information sites online, news from publishers is always supervised and regulated by the authorities which ensures the news is always valid and not misleading. This clear functioning results in the lower risk, where readers getting untrue information and falling for it. Moreover, reading prints also prevent readers from getting fragmented concentration which occurs when they have to juggle between reading and paying attention to other notifications on their phone.
In summary, although reading digitally is undoubtedly beneficial to publishers and readers because of its rapid and adaptive functioning, conventional methods like newspapers and magazines still have a place in society because of their strict validity.
