The phenomenon of parent’s effect on their children is ubiquitous across the world. It has become a controversial issue weather pupils are more influenced by their ancestors or from media and friends. In this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and shed some light on why I believe the latter has more influence.
Many people believe that upbringing plays a vital role in shaping a child. One key factor for this belief is, youngsters learn from role modelling of their caretakers. Furthermore, it is possible for a young child to behave like their father or mother in various ways. To illustrate, toddlers learn to speak a lot of words at home, whatever is spoken in front of them, and they easily catch and repeat it. Hence, it is important to be careful with words in front of them. Another factor contributing to this discussion is that, the habits of individuals are a replica of the actions demonstrated to them in their childhood. For example, adults who have witnessed divorce in their family during adolescence, tend to have a higher rate of divorce in their marriage. Consequently, alcoholic people generally have drinking guardians.
In contrast, others believe that development in kids is associated with their friends and TV. This is another perspective and social media is a main reason for scholars to learn from their surroundings. For instance, it is a possibility to learn abusive language from soap-operas and develop habit of frequently using it. Moreover, peers can alter many habits amongst each other which can affect their development. One good illustration of this is; as adolescents are easily influenced by their environment, teenagers can indulge in habits of smoking and drinking from their peer-group which is harmful for them in the long run.
In conclusion, it is evident from the above discussion; both the views are a mixed bag of merits and demerits. In my humble opinion, off-springs are influenced by both parents and peers. While, they learn role modelling and repetitive behaviour from their parents, on the same hand, adapt bad influence and habits from their peers and TV. Hence, both the sides cannot be neglected and it is responsibility of guardians to monitor young children.
