Painting, accompanied with music and drawing, is one of the special subjects which are taught at school. There are some controversies between considering this subject a compulsory at school curriculums or viewing it as an optional. From my point of view, it should be better for these subjects to be seen as optional.
Individuals who oppose this idea indicate that special subjects such as painting and drawing help students to develop their aesthetic ability. Knowledge taken out from painting such as mixing color, arrange the layout can benefit students in their future job, especially those related to architectural, design fields. Besides, some students also realize and nurture their special talent through art lessons, some of them even gain high prizes in well-known contests and receive admission from prestigious universities which appreciate candidates through comprehensive view. For example, Viet Nam National Academy of music gives a hundred slots every year for students who win big music contests all over the country.
Although I agree that special subjects play a vital role in the students’ development, I still believe there is no need to consider art subjects as compulsory in school curriculums. The subjects on the gradual exam don’t include drawing and painting. So it will be a waste of time if students spend too much time on a subject that will not be a criteria for college entrance. Additionally, art is a field that needs some aptitude. Therefore some students still struggle to achieve a standard score for passing these subjects. Some students even miss a chance to gain a scholarship due to low marks on drawing.
It is reasonable for drawing and painting to be optional subjects on school curriculums.Along side drawing, painting, school can open many other special counterparts based on learner’s expectation. Moreover, many singing, dancing and painting contests should be held frequently in order to encourage the ability of students. Furthermore, there should be some gifted clubs where many students with the same hobbies can join and develop together.
In conclusion, although art plays a substantial role in the development of students, they should be considered as optional subjects due to many purposes.
