Nowadays, due to the easy availability of cars, the number of vehicles on the roads has increased. Many of those who drive on a daily basis have constant encounters with reckless drivers. Accidents and mishaps have become common due to a lack of sense of responsibility. As a result, many believe that regular driving tests should be conducted for drivers. Conversely, others feel that retaking a test is wastage of time and resources and is therefore an unnecessary formality. In my opinion, regular tests are important in the present day scenario to ensure road safety, impart basic civic sense and to review traffic rules with tenured drivers.
Firstly, through periodic tests, people would make an effort to maintain a good track record and follow rules sincerely, fearing that constant violations and fines may lead to a permanent cancellation of their driving license. Moreover, this would help authorities keep a close check on people who drive senselessly thus posing a threat to the safety of others.
Furthermore, by taking tests after fixed intervals, drivers would get a chance to be reacquainted with traffic rules and road safety guidelines leading to more responsible behaviour on the roads. Also, sometimes people are unable to drive well because of age, illness or other physical limitations. Through regular tests, authorities will be able to evaluate such situations and take necessary measures.
To conclude, I would like to say that the advantages of regular driving tests definitely outweigh the mere inconvenience of taking the test repeatedly. This should be followed up by strict enforcement of traffic rules and imposition of heavy fines in case the rules are not adhered to.
