There are different views on whether students should fear their teachers or have a friendly relationship with them. Some people believe that being strict and creating a bit of fear can lead to better discipline, while others think that being supportive and kind is more helpful. In this essay, I will discuss both sides and give my own opinion.
On the one hand, fear of the teacher can be useful in some cases. When students know that the teacher is strict, they may feel more responsible and do their homework on time, not because they enjoy it, but because they don’t want to get in trouble. For example, many students start behaving better in class simply because they are afraid of being punished. This can help maintain order and focus during lessons. Strictness can also make students take their studies more seriously, especially when they are young and still learning discipline.
On the other hand, being too strict or making students feel scared can also cause problems. When students are afraid, they may not ask questions or express their opinions. This can affect their understanding of the subject because they feel nervous or uncomfortable in class. A friendly teacher, however, can create a positive environment where students feel free to share their thoughts, ask for help, and feel supported. Besides, a good teacher doesn’t only teach academic subjects, but also gives life advice, emotional support, and motivation. These things help students grow in other areas too, not just education.
In my opinion, having a friendly and supportive teacher is more effective in the long run. When students feel close to their teacher, they are more likely to respect them and follow their guidance. I personally admire one of my teachers who was kind but also serious when needed, and thanks to her I was inspired to become a teacher myself. That shows how positive relationships between teachers and students can have a strong impact on a student’s future.
In conclusion, while fear and strictness may bring some short-term discipline, a warm and trusting relationship between teachers and students brings better results in the long term. Therefore, teachers should be approachable, supportive, and kind while also maintaining clear rules and expectations.
