Band 7+: Some people think our first impression of someone is important, while others think we should not judge another person so quickly and should take our time to get to know them better. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Opinions are divided on whether a first impression of people plays a significant role or not. While some argue it is of great importance, assessing personality is daunting and requires time to reach a conclusion, a sentiment I share.

One might think first impressions are a core idea, impacting many aspects of life. Most people strive to make a lasting impression, as it improves their chances of getting dream jobs or university scholarships. In detail, in job and university interviews, candidates’ personalities are evaluated in the form of open questions given by a panel, and this process is highly critical to defining their future to some extent. If they are quite capable of making a positive impression, the odds are they can build a brilliant career or become a student. For example, high-profile universities and organizations have developed a policy to assess potential grant holders and employees by asking questions of expert psychologists who can evaluate their characteristics in the first interview

These arguments notwithstanding, I believe extra time is more essential in terms of judging individuals. Some people are incapable of showcasing their talents in the first meeting or interview since they feel stressed out and under pressure while answering a wide range of questions. However, if they are offered the additional time of a week or a month to be assessed, they can demonstrate their prowess as suitable candidates. For instance, my friend was hired at one of the recognized and thriving language schools as an intern teacher and could make an official contract to work full time after she was thoroughly assessed by other experienced teachers while doing an internship.

In conclusion, although the first impression people leave contributes to know people’ true color, I believe personal characteristics are well demonstrated after some time if people are provided with additional time to show their abilities.
