Social relationships cannot be overlooked and the impression people have of us is essential for one’s wellbeing in society. While some believe that the first impression they have of an individual is crucial, others consider that people should be cautious when judging and drawing conclusions about people.
One side of the debate has it that, the first impression of someone matters. Societal rules and normes can be very harsh, and the way one stands out can either open or close doors in society. This is certainly because a person’s attitude on the first encounter can give a glimpse of who the person is. For instance, an individual invited for an interview can their secure a work opportunity or not based on the character he or she portrays. In other words, a polite person marks positively, whereas a disrespectful one marks negatively.
On the other hand, while the first impression is key, it is interesting to note that taking time to know someone can help dissipate preconceived ideas and doubts. It is certainly inappropriate to be quick to judge because this leads into errors on several occasions. Thus, learning to know and appreciate people can lead us to discover great minds and personalities. This is central to fostering social cohesion and relationships.
In my opinion, learning to now people is fundamental for social relations. It allows us to discover hidden personalities, understand people’s thoughts and viewpoints, and reinforce the bonds of friendship. Nevertheless, the first impression we have about someone permits us to have a taste of who the person can be.
