There are some arguments about whether commercial communications targeting children should be prohibited. In my point of view, advertising aimed at children should exist for some reasons.
On the one hand, advertising can bring some positive effects for children. There are many advertisements introducing education products, nutrition foods for children that help their parents have more information to do better in children’s upbringing. Some people may argue that some promotions related to junk food, video games or expensive toys leave negative effects on children’s development and behavior. However, parents and schools also can use them as a tool to educate children to deal with challenges of a commercial world. Parents and schools can teach a child right from wrong by using advertising as a method to help them be more knowledgeable and make their own choices.
On the other hand, shielding a youngster from all forms of advertising is unrealistic and inefficient. Firstly, it is difficult to determine which advertisements are aimed exclusively at youngsters. An advertisement often has some types of target audience. Take video game advertisements for example, none of them express it is only for children and in fact both children and adults are target customers. Secondly, preventing children from being exposed to commercial intentions is not able to tackle children’s issues that are blamed for advertising. For example, child obesity is caused by many reasons such as diet and exercise, that often depend on family’s lifestyle much more than eating fat foods influenced by advertising.
In conclusion, I believe that banning advertising aimed at children should not be conducted because it is a wasted endeavour and children and parents still can take some advantages from advertisements.
