Band 9: Some people think that all teenagers should be required to do unpaid work in their free time to help the local community. They believe this would benefit both the individual teenager and society as a whole. Do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that all young people should be required to take part in voluntary work during their free time in order to support the local community. Proponents believe this would bring benefits not only to teenagers themselves but also to society as a whole. From my perspective, however, I strongly disagree with this view for several reasons.

Firstly, young people should be free to decide how they spend their leisure time. Apart from community service, there is a wide range of activities they can engage in, such as playing sports, pursuing hobbies, or simply spending time with family and friends. If teenagers are forced to participate in unpaid work, they may lose motivation and develop a negative attitude towards responsibility. Instead, parents and teachers should encourage them to take part in voluntary activities voluntarily, rather than pressuring them to do so. For instance, in some countries, secondary schools make voluntary work compulsory, such as working in nursing homes or cleaning public spaces. However, such requirements often create resentment rather than genuine willingness to contribute.

Secondly, compulsory unpaid work may place an additional burden on teenagers who are already under significant academic pressure. Many students spend long hours studying for exams and therefore need free time to relax, pursue personal interests, and maintain a balanced lifestyle. If they are required to do community service, they may struggle to manage their studies effectively. For example, a high school student who spends several hours each week on a community project may become too exhausted to concentrate on homework, which could negatively affect academic performance and overall well-being.

In conclusion, I am completely against the idea of forcing teenagers to engage in unpaid work in their free time. Such work is not the only valuable activity they can pursue, and without genuine motivation, young people are unlikely to benefit from it. Instead, voluntary service should remain a choice, not an obligation.
