While many people assert that doing paid work can bring merits for children, other people consider that it can be detrimental. Children can learn about earning money and gain independence from doing paid work but there are also some drawbacks to be taken into accounts
On the one hand, doing paid work can be slightly beneficial for children. One of the minor advantages is that they can learn the value of money. This is because after spending a long time working, the children find how difficult to earn money which makes them appreciate it more. Another basic positive aspect is that working teaches them how to manage and save money. For instance many older children have a part-time job to save money and buy something they want. Otherwise, they are unable to afford it.
On the other hand, one problem when children have a job is that it exposes them to exploitation through slave labor. For example, in some developing countries, children are made to work in a full-time job, but they are not protected by law due to their age. The second key drawback is that children working for long hours can prevent them from focusing on their school work. Having a good education is a key to a successful future. So being employed as a child may result in poor academic performance and getting low grades at school.
